ELIGIBILITY RULES

  1. Ordained, local conference or Annual Conference licensed ministers who are or have been members of the Michigan Conference Church of the United Brethren in Christ having served a minimum of eight years with the Michigan, North Michigan, Detroit Conferences, or the General Church of The United Brethren in Christ and having reached the age of sixty-five years and opting to take a retired relationship with the United Brethren Church, shall be eligible to receive an Assistance Gift based on years of actual service to the above-named Conferences and General Church up to a maximum of 40 years.

  2. Surviving spouses of ministers, having served a minimum of eight years with their spouse in Michigan, North Michigan, Detroit Conferences, or the General Church of The United Brethren in Christ, and having reached the age of sixty-five years, shall be eligible to receive an Assistance Gift based on 75% of the Assistance Gift on the actual years of their spouse to a maximum of 40 years; but only as long as she or he remains a member of the United Brethren Church.

    Should he/she marry him/her before his/her retirement from active service, the survivor, upon reaching the age of 65 years, would be eligible for an Assistance Gift on the basis of 75% of the actual years he/she served with their spouse in active service in Michigan, North Michigan, Detroit Conferences, or the General Church of The United Brethren in Christ. Surviving spouses may apply for an Assistance Gift three months before reaching his/her 65th birthday. No survivor shall be eligible if he/she has married the minister after his/her retirement from active service.


  3. Missionaries of the Michigan, North Michigan, Detroit Conferences, having served under the Commission of the General Church of the United Brethren in Christ, shall be eligible to receive Assistance Gifts upon meeting the following qualifications:
    1. Reached the age of 65.

    2. Accumulated a minimum of 8 years and up to a maximum of 40 years of credited service.

    3. Furlough time shall be considered as credited service providing the person remains under direct supervision and is receiving compensation from the General Church of the United Brethren in Christ.

    4. Maintain membership in the United Brethren Church.


  4. Removal of Credentials;
    1. If a minister withdraws from the conference, or shall have his/her credentials removed, all gifts are suspended. Should he/she be reinstated to the conference, and afterwards takes a retired relationship, the years prior to withdrawal shall be restored to his/her service record.

    2. If a retired minister experiences the loss or suspension of credentials from the Michigan Conference, all gifts are suspended. Should he/she be reinstated, all gifts are restored.


  5. If a minister transfers to another conference in The Church of The United Brethren in Christ, and reaches the age of 65, he/she shall be eligible and credited for the time served in Michigan, North Michigan, Detroit Conferences, or the General Church of The United Brethren in Christ, but only as long as she or he remains a member of the United Brethren Church.

  6. If a minister or missionary is married and his/her spouse is also a minister or missionary, only one person shall be eligible for the Assistance Gift. However, as survivor, he/she may be eligible for the gift as a minister or missionary and may receive the greater amount. He/she may apply as the direct recipient of the larger gift.

  7. Years of Service shall be established from the treasurer/business manager of Lane-Dulcenia Memorial Home Board’s record, as provided in Section V of the bylaws.

  8. If a person retires before the age of 65 he/she may choose to start receiving gifts at a reduced rate based on the formula used by social security;
    • At the age of 62, he/she would receive 80% of his/her Assistance Gift; at the age of 63, he/she would receive 86% of his/her Assistance Gift; at the age of 64, he/she: would receive 92% of his/her Assistance Gift. Amount of service year credit will be calculated only on the full year, not fractions of a year.


  9. Any active minister/missionary who works in secular employment in any given year up to the time of retirement, and from that employment derives retirement benefits, may have his/her assistance gift reduced. Such information shall be provided to the Lane Home’s business manager at the time of the Assistance Gift Application.
